WRECKAGE
Breaking the Chain of Family Trauma

A Memoir
Wreckage is my family's story of trauma, from my point of view: as the youngest of five kids, as I look back from the vantage point of middle age. The essays depict our family's struggles, how each of us has coped (or tried to!) and the lasting impact of trauma on the human spirit.

Somewhere along the way, Mom learned the art of ignorance. If you ignore difficult things, she seemed to believe, they couldn’t really affect you. Acknowledging them – or worse yet, talking about them – could only bring more difficulty.
Lessons on Life from a Dog named Penny

Slow Down, a memoir of Penny – our “mixi-Doodle” – who taught us much about the business of being human. It’s my imagining of what her lessons to us humans would be, were she able to advise us. It’s also the love story of two people, a rescue dog, and the unexpected bond we shared.
It was then I realized she would need to discover trust and love on her own, and that my attempts to convince her couldn't break through her protective shell. Every dog needs to learn in her own way, in her own time.
